Hard Contact Lenses

Hard Contact Lenses are more durable than soft lenses

Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses are more commonly called hard contact lenses. For some lens wearers they are the preferred types of lens. These lenses allow more oxygen to reach the cornea because the are made with silicone polymers. The hard contact lenses are more durable and retain their shape better than most soft lenses. If your eye care doctor recommends them for you, be aware that you must follow the cleaning and replacement schedule diligently. Your doctor will give you a schedule for replacement and for return visits.

Getting used to your hard contact lenses can take up to eight weeks compared to one week with the soft lenses. They can be ordered by mail, by phone, and on the Internet.

Proper cleaning of your hard contact lenses is of utmost importance. You should always use a commercially produced cleaner. Homemade saline solutions are dangerous. Start with clean hands; never touch your lenses with unwashed hands as you can contaminate them. Never rinse your lenses with tap water always use purified water. Always follow your doctor’s directions for the cleaning and care of your hard contact lenses.
